Der größte Hersteller von Mobilfunkgeräten weltweit ist Nokia, daneben sind u.  Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, LG, Motorola und Sony Ericsson bedeutende Produzenten.

Die durchschnittliche Besitzdauer eines Mobiltelefons beträgt in Deutschland, vertrags- und innovationszyklenbedingt 18 bis 24 Monate. In Europa werden jährlich ca. 100 Millionen Altgeräte entsorgt. Das entspricht 20.000 Tonnen bzw. 500 LKW-Ladungen. Seit dem 24. März 2006 können in Deutschland Mobiltelefone wegen des Elektro- und Elektronikgerätegesetzes vom Verbraucher kostenlos entsorgt werden.
